A Visit to the Whitworth Art Gallery,
Manchester University

Saturday, 10 March 2012

The Whitworth Art Gallery at Manchester University has a strong collection of original artwork for illustration. Of particular note is the Walter Crane archive that formed the basis of Helen Stalker’s article in IBIS Journal 3. Helen will be there to show us these books and a selection of other items from the collection and to talk about them. The Whitworth collection also includes a substantial collection of original artwork by Henry Ospovat, whose life and work is the subject of an article in the latest issue of Studies in Illustration. These drawings will be available for members to view.

The visit to the Whitworth, which is limited to 12 people, will start at 2:00pm. Please email Mark Richards to check availability of places. Tickets are priced £5 each.

We havefound an additional place to visit, which we think members will find interesting; this is an exhibition by the Society of Wood Engravers at Manchester Metropolitan University, Special Collections Gallery. The gallery does not open until 12:00 which does not leave a lot of time for viewing if we are to have time for a leisurely lunch before our main appointment at the Whitworth at 14:00, but I think it will be worth a quick visit. MMU and the Whitworth are just under a mile apart, both along Oxford Road.

This gives members three opportunities to meet up:

From 12:00 at MMU in the exhibition. Geoffrey Beare and I will be there from 12:00 and will look out for other members. See the attached document for further details.

From 13:00 at the Café at the Whitworth Art Gallery. Lunches are available, but there is also some seating available for anyone bringing their own lunch.

At 14:00 in the main foyer of the Whitworth Art Gallery, where we will be met by Helen Stalker, who will take us to the special collections room for private viewing of carefully selected items.

The meeting will end around 16:00.
